Shane Schick of Computer World spoke with Raj Mallempti of VMWare and was told that VMWare expects Windows 7 to bring a windfall of new support to VDI inititives. His reasoning is that XP is nearing end of life, most companies have not deployed Vista and are now faced with potentially expensive hardware upgrades to move to Windows 7. Aparently the thought of an expense in this ecomy is causing people to more closly consider VDI as an alterantive to a hardware refresh. Check out Shane’s article here.

ActiveDir.org was started by Tony Murray in January 2001 and is now run by Tony together with Matty Holland (who is responsible for the development of the website). I have had the excellent fortune to work with Tony on several ocasions and it was easy to see why he was able to create such a sucess with ActiveDir.org. The original intention behind the site was to provide an open platform (using a mailing list server) for discussion about Microsoft’s Active Directory and Group Policy. Today, the primary focus of the site remains the discussion forum, which has grown to a membership of around 2000 and includes a number of Microsoft employees as well as MVPs. The mailing list is very active and generates an average of around 25 posts per day. It is rare for a question to go unanswered. The site also provides subscribers with the ability to generate their own community content through Wiki-style functionality. Kevin Sullivan a friend and former Aelita associate once pointed out to me that a community cannot be made; only the infrastructure can be created and later the members make the community. ActiveDir.org

The Surface device announced by Microsoft is based on infered sensors built into a impact resistant plactic surface. When objects such as a digital device or your finger is placed on the surface a special version of Microsoft Vista recognizes the object via. the scanners and interacts with the device. i.e. place a digital camera on the table and it automatically displays the pictures on the table’s surface. The only draw back I can see is that having a display built into a table is pretty diffcult to work with.
