Cloud computing: Don’t get caught without an exit strategy

A assocate here at Quest sent this article to me that discusses some of the challenges around Cloud Computer aka Software as a Service. Issues identifyed in the article are typical of any new technology specifically: fear of vendor lock-in and lack of standards. Essentially the author, Mary Brandel suggests that Cloud computing is more marketing than technology at this point.

Isn’t all new technology hype before reality? The biggest advantage I can see is the cost savings, i.e. paying from an operational budget not a capital one. And in this economy, that’s big. That having been said, moving critical data offsite has its risks. My fear is that one of these SaaS companies will have a major security breach and will severly limit the Cloud’s staying power – or at least uptake.
