The future of Microsoft Virtual Server and Hypervisor

Virtual Server has been slow to evolve since Microsoft acquired the code and talent from Connectix several years ago. I had the opportunity to be a beta tester for Connectix before Microsoft and honestly I’ve not been impressed with the Microsoft’s progress so far. Most of the improvements I’ve seen have really been under the covers and not all that impressive. All the while VMWare keeps knocking at the door with some pretty cool features like VMotion.

With that said, I am pleasantly surprised with the Virtual Server roadmap that Mike Neil outlined this week.

(As an aside, Mike was the guy at Connectix that supported me when Connectix VS Beta 1 blew away my server after enabling Hyper Threading. :) From Mike’s presentation it appears that those issues will be behind them in Virtual Server 2005R2.
